The Shooting of Sonya Massey, A Family’s Search for Truth

Estimated read time 5 min read

The family of Sonya Massey, a 36-year-old woman who was shot by law enforcement deputy in Sangamon County earlier this month, is demanding an explanation. After her death, the initial reports falsely claimed that she killed herself. This case which took place on July 6 has led to widespread anger and calls for justice.

Confusion Arises from Dispatch and Hospital Reports

Sonya Massey’s father, James Wilburn, found out from the news the following day that his daughter had been shot by a police officer. Initial calls from emergency services just after the shooting falsely claimed that Massey had committed suicide. This wrong information was also reported to the HSHS St. John’s Hospital where staff were first simply told that Massey’s injury was self-caused.

Sean Grayson, who used to be a deputy in Sangamon County, has been charged with murder in the first degree for firing three shots at Massey and hitting her once in her face. Grayson did not turn on his body camera until after he shot at her, but his partner’s camera recorded what occurred before and after this event.

The Incident Caught on Camera

The video showed Grayson’s interaction with Massey where she allegedly tried to attack him with boiling water. Grayson can be heard describing what happened to another officer,

  • “It is safe inside. She was alone,” said Grayson.
  • The Sergeant queried, “Where’s the gun?”
  • “No,” responded Grayson.” She approached me with boiling water.”
  • Another question came from the sergeant,” You shot into flesh?” “Yes”, answered Grayson. “She threatened me to use Jesus’ name and approached me with water at boiling point.”

Miscommunication on Dispatch Audio

The emergency audio displays a huge amount of uncertainty between officers and emergency dispatchers,

  • Speaker 1, “703, we need to start getting suspect or vehicle info once we have it. That’ll really help them out.”
  • Speaker 2, “Did she do this to herself? Is that correct?”
  • Speaker 3, “(Inaudible) Did you catch the update from the county?”
  • Speaker 2, “No, I didn’t catch that.”
  • Speaker 3, “It was self-caused.”

The body camera footage did not show Grayson or the other officer saying that Massey had caused her own injury. The officers on scene were confused about what happened. When Grayson was asked who the suspect was, he replied “Me,” which led another officer to say, “Oh, I wasn’t sure what had transpired.”

The Family Grapples for Clarity

In an interaction with news media, Massey’s family describes how challenging it was to get reliable details about the incident. Jimmy Crawford Jr., the father of Massey’s child said that one of his friends who worked at the hospital called him when they realized it was Massey who had been shot and they were worried because no family members had been told as yet. Malachi Hill, Massey’s son expressed concern about hospital employees being tightlipped about who was involved in shooting – only specifying description and nature of injury.

Massey’s father James Wilburn is asking for Sangamon county’s sheriff’s resignation stating, “The sheriff should step down because there seems to be a toxic culture behind how my family got treated so poorly”.

Legal and Social Reactions

Following a meeting with Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, attorney Ben Crump, the Massey family’s lawyer, confirmed the Department of Justice will investigate the case. The governor emphasizes, “The authorities should thoroughly look into every part of what led to, caused and followed this killing.

“Sangamon County Sheriff Jack Campbell publicly criticized Grayson’s actions on Facebook which he referred to as “foolhardy and inexcusable”. He stated that Grayson’s actions do not represent their training or values and confirmed that Grayson won’t be allowed to work in law enforcement again.

Reaction From Society and Legislators

The footage from the body camera has been widely viewed across America, instigating heartfelt emotions from President Joe Biden who is calling for justice for Massey’s Family. The president mentioned, “Sonya’s death due an officer responding… reminds us far too much. Black Americans frequently fear for their security in ways many others don’t feel.” Biden encouraged lawmakers to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act with aim of preventing similar future events.

Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul along with other officials share these feelings calling the footage shocking, chilling and deeply sad. This case inspired public protests and a peaceful march in Springfield, demonstrating extensive backing for Massey’s family, demanding change systemically.

Call For Fairness and Responsibility

Sonya Massey’s fatal shooting has highlighted major issues within legal enforcement operations triggering a demand for responsibility and fairness. As court proceedings continue, the Massey family backed by famed civil rights promoters keep trying to get answers assuring that such tragedy never repeats itself.

This occurrence underscores an immediate need to reform legal enforcement methods as well as emphasizing on accurate timely crisis communication. The call for justice for Sonya Massey resonates powerfully, hoping her demise may lead to meaningful changes aiming at preventing future tragedies.
