Lincoln County Residents Can Seek Shelter from Blue 2 Wildfire

Estimated read time 4 min read

Two weeks after the Blue 2 fire ignited in the Lincoln National Forest, its rapid growth—fueled by high winds over Memorial Day weekend—has forced the New Mexico American Red Cross Chapter to expand its evacuation services. These services now include both the Lincoln County Fairgrounds and Capitan High School.

Current Shelter Utilization and Services

As of May 30, the New Mexico Red Cross Chapter reported no individuals had utilized the shelter at Capitan High School, located at 519 Smokey Bear Boulevard. However, at least 10 people had used the shelter at Lincoln County Fairgrounds. Brianna Ventura, Red Cross Public Relations specialist, emphasized that those evacuated from the wildfire’s path are welcome to take shelter at either location at any time, with no current limit on the number of people who can be accommodated.

Evacuation Centers for Residents and Pets

  • Capitan Fairgrounds at 101 5th Street in Capitan, New Mexico, is accepting both people and animals.
  • Lincoln County Humane Society at 25962 U.S. 70 in Ruidoso is available for sheltering small pets.

The Red Cross emergency shelters provide essential services such as:

  • A place to sleep
  • Food and water
  • Health services, including the replacement of lost prescriptions or glasses

Residents seeking shelter can bring bedding, clothing, medications, an emergency kit, and a child’s comfort toy. However, weapons, illegal drugs, and alcohol are strictly prohibited.

Residents in Lincoln County can receive immediate updates on the wildfires and any evacuation orders by registering for CodeRed alerts through the Lincoln County website.

Status of the Blue 2 Fire

The Blue 2 Fire has burned 7,455 acres and remained uncontained as of May 20. Fire officials reported 699 personnel were actively combating the flames, using various strategies to protect structures and create control lines.

Firefighting Efforts and Challenges

Firefighters continue to reassess and improve structure protection efforts previously put in place. Crews are using existing features, such as trail systems, old roads, and rock formations, to create handlines. Tools being used include:

  • Hand tools
  • Bulldozers
  • Masticators
  • Aerial resources

The crews are working to extinguish parts of the fire line that have been holding heat over the past few days and ensuring these areas are cool to the human touch.

Environmental challenges include:

  • Inaccessibility to some areas of the fire’s edge
  • Steep terrain
  • Hot temperatures
  • Changing wind directions during the day

Strong winds and hot temperatures were forecast for Thursday, which could cause embers and charred branches to fall, leading to more flames. Smoke was expected to be visible in the region as personnel continued to battle the fire.

Community Awareness and Preparedness

Staying informed and prepared is crucial for community safety. Residents are urged to follow evacuation orders and advisories and to be aware of the current status of the fire.

Check on Vulnerable Neighbors

As you receive updates about your immediate area, please check on neighbors who are elderly or have disabilities to ensure they are aware and have assistance if needed. If someone requires special help, such as those using wheelchairs, assist them now rather than waiting.

Fire Resources and Personnel

The Blue 2 Fire is an active wildfire burning in the White Mountain Wilderness of Lincoln National Forest, approximately 8 miles north of Ruidoso. Since its detection on May 16, 2024, the fire has expanded to 7,455 acres.

  • 699 personnel
  • 13 crews

Environmental challenges include steep terrain and changing winds.
