Why the 2026 governor races could reshape American politics

May 13, 2026 by Maria Santiago Leave a Comment

More than 30 governorships will be contested across the United States during the 2026 midterm elections, with several key races expected to shape the future direction of American politics on issues ranging from abortion and healthcare to education, voting rights and LGBTQ+ policy.

A new analysis published by The 19th highlights a series of closely watched gubernatorial contests unfolding in battleground states and politically divided regions across the country.

Many of the races involve open seats as term-limited governors step aside, creating opportunities for new political figures to emerge ahead of the 2028 presidential election cycle.

Several Democratic-led states won by Donald Trump in 2024 – including Arizona, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Kansas and Wisconsin — will hold governor elections in 2026.

The article notes that governors increasingly play a central role in shaping state-level policies on healthcare, reproductive rights, education and election administration, particularly as political power in the United States becomes more decentralized.

Women candidates are also expected to play a major role in several high-profile races.

In Arizona, Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs is expected to face a Republican challenge from either Rep. Andy Biggs or Rep. David Schweikert.

In Michigan, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson is considered the Democratic front-runner in what is expected to become one of the country’s most competitive races following the departure of term-limited Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

Meanwhile, Amy Klobuchar has entered the governor’s race in Minnesota after Gov. Tim Walz declined to seek another term.

In New Mexico, former Interior Secretary Deb Haaland is attempting to become the state’s next governor after previously becoming the first Native American Cabinet secretary in US history.

The article also highlights major races in California, Georgia, Maine, New York and Wisconsin.

In California, Democrats including former Rep. Katie Porter, businessman Tom Steyer and former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra are competing to replace outgoing Gov. Gavin Newsom.

The race is expected to attract national attention because of California’s increasingly adversarial relationship with the Trump administration.

The article suggests many of these governor contests could influence the national political climate ahead of the next presidential election.

Governors have become increasingly important figures in modern American politics, often shaping state responses to issues such as abortion access, immigration, election rules, education policy and public health.

The races may also test whether Democrats can maintain strength in battleground states after Trump’s 2024 victory.
